SUPER URGENT MESSAGE FOR GLENORCHY

Jan 10, 2016

Update on Monday 10am

Glenorchy water supply is back to normal after last night's unexplained emptying of the reservoir. An estimated 200,000 litres of water was drawn down in a short time, late afternoon to early evening - put it another way, that's 200 tonnes of water! Not something that happens when someone just leaves a tap on, or a leak. We do know that it wasn't a burst main or infrastructure failure, because the outflow stopped around the time that we publicised the problem and was no trace of large amounts of water ponding anywhere. What we don't know is who was responsible or what they were using the water for.

So please help us, Glenorchy residents - if you saw anyone connecting to a hydrant on the road, or any unusual activity involving water, tankers or irrigation, please call 4410499 or email services@qldc.govt.nz and let us know.

Update on Sunday at 10:08pm

Veolia's engineers have reduced the massive outflow from the reservoir but are still trying to trace the cause. At present supply is being maintained through a bypass direct from the bore to the town and limited supply from the reservoir - that should keep the water flowing for most people but those on the north-east side of town may notice low pressure.

If you have no water at all, please ring asap and let us know 034410499.

We are also still keen to hear from anyone who has noticed unusual water use, an open fire hydrant or water flowing down gutters that might indicate a burst main.

Urgent message for Glenorchy - there is a significant and unexplained draw on the town's water supply and if not identified and resolved the town is likely to be without water by about 9pm.

Veolia staff are on their way now but if you notice a burst water main, a fire hydrant that has been opened or any unusual irrigation activity please call QLDC immediate and let us know on 4410499.

We will update when we know more but in the meantime you should fill a couple of containers with water for drinking in the next few hours.
