NEWS FROM THE GLENORCHY BATTERY ASSOCIATION
Oct 24, 2020
The GBA Committee is extremely pleased and very grateful to have received a pledge from THE GLENORCHY COMMUNITY TRUST for a substantial amount towards the purchase of the replica stamper that hopefully is to be installed at the battery. The GCT pledge is a huge initial step towards raising sufficient funds for purchasing, conveying and installing the magnificent piece that has been engineered by Nigel Longman, in Cromwell.
Recently, Reid Earthmoving re-built the dam (at a generously discounted cost) that is required to hold water to drive the machinery, which, once the stamper is installed, will be able to be operated more or less as it once was.
The original stamper was a five stamp unit, which was removed some years ago and is now part of a working display in the Cromwell Gorge. Nigel’s replica is a four-stamp unit but it will serve extremely well in completing the picture for those interested to know exactly how the operation worked.
It is hoped that, eventually, the GBA will be able to hold demonstrations at advertised times, providing a living memory of the hard work, hard times and hard men that lived in the clouds working those astonishing mines.
