Glenorchy Community “embraces individuality and innovation”

Oct 31, 2016

Community-driven initiative Shaping Our Future have released their first Glenorchy Community Visioning draft report.

The report is an extension of information gathered from community members at public forum in April 2015.

A volunteer taskforce of locals have developed a long term vision for the community:

“A unique community that fosters and embraces individuality and innovation, encourages resilience and promotes community vitality and collaboration. The Glenorchy community has a collective strong voice that advocates for positive change.

Glenorchy has infrastructure to support a thriving boutique local economy in keeping with the rural landscape, actively protects and enhances the natural environment and collectively works towards providing their own resources (self-sufficiency)”

The proposed vision and 9 key recommendations will be discussed by the community at public forum on Tuesday 8th November, 6pm at the Glenorchy Fire Station.

The report focuses Environment, Economy, Infrastructure and Community, identified as the key areas of importance at the original forum.

Among the key recommendations are steps towards achieving long term sustainability in infrastructure, remote education solutions, cycling and tramping networks, addressing traffic management and the District Plan.

The formation of a Glenorchy Business Association is also recommended to ensure the long term economic future of the community is proactively and collectively managed by business owners operating in and around Glenorchy.

John Glover, Taskforce Chair said “Our community is unique, with a diverse range of talented individuals that have chosen to make Glenorchy their home.

Our goal was to focus on the long term, what do we want our community to look like?  What are the things we value most? What steps do we need to take to ensure we still have a thriving, unique community in 30 plus years?

There was clear information from the original forum on what was important to our community members.  We have proposed a long term vision to collectively work towards. As individuals we may take different paths towards achieving a collective result.”

David Kennedy, Chair of Shaping our Future said “The Glenorchy community members at the original forum were passionate about their area, its uniqueness and its challenges.”

“This is the first time we have used our process for a smaller community and we look forward to continuing to work with the people of Glenorchy to achieve their vision.

Our process is designed to be flexible in making sure the people of our communities have a voice in shaping their own future. We plan to revisit our forum topics every 3-5 years to make sure they are ‘living documents’ and still relevant to the people living within an area.”

Shaping Our Future is an independent, incorporated society that engages the community, gains the input of residents and ratepayers, and obtains commitment to action in support of the community-created district vision.

About Shaping Our Future Incorporated

A process designed to use collective community expertise to build consensus and create a great future for our district. Shaping Our Future was instigated in December 2010 and was incorporated as a charitable society in January 2013. In 2012 following a district wide visioning process, it established a vision incorporating a series of priorities.  Its forums and task forces are directed to work towards the vision and connect with the priorities. The process of any given forum on any given subject begins with public forums and online discussions which progress to establishing task forces to work through issues. Recommendations are finally presented to local and national agencies as required. For more information, please visit www.shapingourfuture.org.nz
