IRA MITCHELL-KIRK Gallery
My childhood was spent in Glenorchy, attending the local school. It was a lonely existence but the surroundings kept me occupied, swimming, walking, climbing and building huts. I have always been in awe of the scenery and it makes me feel small and a bit over powered.
My art is an abstraction of the monumental forms of nature, broad plains of colour, simplified but still recognisable in their simplest form and local colors.
I paint full time and also teaching, often traveling to rural NZ schools. I have a BFA in Design, a Diploma in Visual Communications and a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching.
As a child I felt out of place as an artist and couldn't imagine making a life around it, but it is possible and full of joy and adventure.
Prints of my works are available at The Glenorchy Trading Post.
