BREXIT AND THE FUTURE OF THE UK AND EU

Jan 16, 2020 - 6:00pm

catalyst

Happy New Year Catalysters, as we kick off the year with a last minute EWS alert!

Christmas brought each of us many different things - ranging from visits from Santa Claus and family, to the chance to wear the annual “Bah humbug” t-shirt.

For the UK it brought an election and a returned Prime Minister who has redeclared his primary priority to lead the UK out of the EU.  Thanks to a very generous offer by a world leading visiting expert, and some holiday scrambling by Catalyst and our supporters, we can present

BREXIT AND THE FUTURE OF THE UK AND EU

Capture CAT2

Two weeks before the UK is due to leave the EU, we are pleased to invite you to a presentation by Dr Fraser Cameron,  the Director of the EU-Asia Centre and a Senior Advisor to the European Policy Centre in Brussels.

A former British diplomat and EU official, Dr Cameron will assess the implications of Brexit and the recent British general election for the future unity of the UK. Will Scotland go independent? What are the prospects for a united Ireland?

And how will the EU fare after losing one of its major member states? What are its domestic and external priorities? How will it deal with a rising China? And where does New Zealand fit in?

Dr Cameron is Director of the EU-Asia Centre in Brussels, a think tank seeking to promote closer relations between the EU and Asia. He is a former European Commission advisor and well known policy analyst and commentator on EU and international affairs.

Dr Cameron is a regular visitor to all major Asian capitals to meet officials and speak at events. He is visiting professor at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, St Andrews University, Scotland, and the University of Auckland; a Senior Advisor to the European Policy Centre (EPC) and the German Institute of Global Affairs (GIGA); and is also a consultant to the BBC and a number of governments on EU affairs.

This presentation will be on Thursday, January 16, at 6pm, hosted by the Rees Hotel. Due to the short notice this events will not be ticketed, however there will be an opportunity to donate at the door, and any donations are gratefully received.

Coming Up
Save the dates for:

February 14, when we will be joined by researchers in advance of the Tourism Policy Summit, who will discuss with us the latest findings on carbon impacts of tourism, especially as practiced here in NZ, with implications for the future (and our community in particular!)  More detail to follow

May 8, for a special event we are holding in collaboration with our local Muslim community in May.  In the wake of the March 15 Mosque massacres, the claim was repeatedly made "They are Us". How true is this?  Is it any truer now than it used to be, and if not, what could make it more so? What is it like to be Muslim in New Zealand, in Queenstown?  And what do people who follow Islam believe in? Catalyst has invited Anjum Rahman - New Zealander of the Year finalist and founder of the Islamic Women's Council in NZ - to discuss these issues from a nationwide perspective.  The evening will start with a meal hosted by our local Muslim community on Friday, May 8. In addition, a follow up discussion is planned on Saturday afternoon with a visiting Imam. Registration will be required (open a month before the event), for catering purposes for Friday night and due to limited space.

We’re excited for the new year, and will be looking to continue last year’s successes in bringing big ideas to our community.  We hope many of you might join us on Thursday to get us started in style!

All the best, the Catalyst Trust team.
